No, the Governor’s Mansion at Colonial Williamsburg isn’t for sale. But at least one of the homes on the market is even older! Here’s my curated selection of classic homes for sale within one hour of downtown Richmond. The list includes multi-million dollar grand estates, modest city and country houses, a couple of horse farms, and some remarkably well-preserved houses in Petersburg at surprisingly low prices per square foot. The oldest house on the list was built in 1642, and the newest in 1900. But age wasn’t my only criterion. I looked for significant period architecture and design that had been respected over the decades, treated like a “feature” rather than a liability to be overcome. But don’t worry, I didn’t go overboard in my demand for historic authenticity — none of these houses have outhouses, or fireplaces as their main source of heat! Most have central air and modern kitchens. The detailed listing page for each home gives you a couple of options to request a showing or more information.
